WASHINGTON NATIONAL CATHEDRAL TO PERFORM SAME-SEX MARRIAGES

The National Cathedral in Washington D.C. is to begin performing same-sex marriage ceremonies. The District of Columbia, and the neighbouring state of Maryland, both legalised same-sex marriage last year.

The National Cathedral has a long and illustrious history. Hosting inaugural services and funerals for Presidents. It was also the place Martin Luther King gave his final sermon.

The Cathedral is part of the Episcopalian church. The bishop of Washington DC, the Rt Rev Mariann Edgar Budde, decided in December to allow churches within the diocese to perform same-sex marriages if they wished.

The Dean of the National Cathedral the Very Rev Gary Hall, said he believes allowing same-sex marriages reflects the diversity found in God’s word.

Speaking to the Associated Press, Hall said, “I read the Bible as seriously as fundamentalists do… and my reading of the Bible leads me to want to do this because I think it’s being faithful to the kind of community that Jesus would have us be.”

In theory ceremonies could take place immediately, however it is likely the first marriages will take place within the next 6-12 months, due to the schedule of the Cathedral and the church’s requirement that couples take part in their pre-marriage counselling course.

NEW YORK CITY FERRY CRASH – AT LEAST 50 INJURED, 1 CRITICAL.

View SEASTREAK WALL STREET FERRY CRASH AT LEAST 50 INJURED ONE CR in a larger map

At least 50 people were injured, two critically, after a commuter ferry slammed into a dock Wednesday morning in Lower Manhattan.

The Seastreak Wall Street ferry from Atlantic Highlands, N.J., banged into the mooring as it arrived at South Street around 8:45 a.m. Wednesday. One person is in critical condition with head injuries.

Those on board said passengers were waiting to disembark and were hurled on the deck after the impact.

“We were pulling into the dock. The boat hit the dock. We just tumbled on top of each other. I got thrown into everybody else. … People were hysterical,” said Ellen Foran.

Those injured were being treated at the scene. There were no immediate details of the injuries and reports on the number of those injured vary.

The Coast Guard said it will be administering drug and alcohol testing  on captain and crew as soon as the injury count concludes.

A corner of the ferry was ripped open like a tin can.  Fire fighters were seen setting up a temporary staging area on the dock, with stretchers and other medical equipment, and some passengers were being removed from the ferry on stretchers for evaluation.  A passenger, Ellen Foran of Neptune City, N.J., said people tumbled on top of one another, hysterical and crying.

More than 340 passengers and crew members were aboard the ferry from New Jersey, one of many that carry commuters to the island of Manhattan.  Dee Wertz was on shore waiting for the ferry and saw the impact.  “It was coming in a little wobbly,” Wertz said.  “It hit the right side of the boat on the dock hard, like a bomb.”  After the impact, the boat was able to dock normally. Wertz said “passengers raced off once the ramp came down.

I think people just wanted to get the heck off the boat as soon as they could,” she said.

Ferry company officials were at the scene.

Ferries are a fairly common way to commute to work in Manhattan, an island separated from New Jersey and the rest of New York City by several rivers.

MANHATTAN NY SUBWAY DEATH 2ND FATAL SHOVE IN A MONTH

By MARC SANTORA and SARAH MASLIN NIR

Queens NY, Sunando Sen was pushed to his death on Thursday night, in what witnesses said was an unprovoked attack.

The Bangladesh passport of Mr. Sen, 46. He opened a copying business this year on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Mr. Suman said Mr. Sen was proud when he had saved enough money to open the business, New Amsterdam Copy.

A woman approaching from behind who had been sitting on a bench and who had been heard mumbling to herself. The woman pushed him into the path of a No. 7 train roaring into the 40th Street-Lowery Street subway station in Sunnyside. Mr. Sen was crushed under the train.

Onlookers screamed, the woman fled the station down two flights of stairs.

The seemingly unprovoked attack, the second time this month that a man was thrown to his death on the subway tracks, stirred some of the deepest fears of New Yorkers.

“When a murder happens in New York, it can often be dismissed as being in someone else’s backyard,” said Gene Russianoff, staff lawyer for the Straphangers Campaign, a rider advocacy group. “The subway is everyone’s backyard.”

Why is the weird death toll climbing in NY ever since Hurricane Sandy? What else was contained in that storm?

Refining hurricane forecasts by connecting the dots

Hurricane origin - Africa

Predictions of North Atlantic hurricane paths based on spatio-temporal data at the region of origin, off the coast of North Africa. Click image to enlarge and for more information.

By graphing points in Earth’s roiling atmosphere with the aid of the latest petascale-power technology, scientists collaborating on Department of Energy-funded research say they could improve major seasonal North Atlantic hurricane forecast reliability by more than 25 percent.

“We ask questions about the end-game of hurricanes: Where will they likely end up in 10 or 15 days?” says Nagiza Samatova, an associate professor in computer science and mathematics at North Carolina State University and a senior research scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

“We are finding local impacts using global data,” adds Alok Choudhary, Samatova’s collaborator and John G. Searle professor of computer science and electrical engineering at Northwestern University.

After a few years of sleuthing through existing climate records, their work is revealing previously unknown but predictive links between distant places that seem to recur during peak years for hurricane activity.
