French politicians are looking at how to best utilise facial recognition technologies. Over the summer French the interior ministry unveiled a new app, Alicem, allowing individuals with a biometric passport or electronic residence permit to identify themselves over the internet using the app.
Macron’s government are also planning to “supervise and assess” how else to use the technology.
However critics warn that Alicem is a step closer to a Chinese-style surveillance program, with questions asked as to how the data will be collected and used.
French authorities also want to harness the technology in the fight against terrorism and crime.
However the technology is still not perfect, and in a recent incident in London facial recognition technology resulted in the arrest of an innocent man.
Experts also warn about the threat hackers pose to huge data bases which contain the biomimetic data of individuals. They argue terrorists could hack such a database and remove information for a wanted criminal replacing it with that of an innocent individual. Pointing out that we are unable to maintain the security of peoples personal financial data; how can we expect to protect a persons facial identity?

Federal authorities arrested a Bangladeshi national Wednesday morning for allegedly plotting to blow up a Federal Reserve Bank in New York Citys lower Manhattan, mere blocks away from the site of the terrorist attack of Sept. 11, 2001. The bank is one of 12 branches around the country. The 21-year-old suspect, Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis, attempted to detonate what he thought was a 1,000-pound bomb in front of the Fed building on Liberty Street, but the device was a fake supplied to him by undercover FBI agents who had been tracking his activity, the FBIs Joint Terrorism Task Force said Wednesday afternoon.
The supposed explosives posed no threat to the public, the FBI said. A criminal complaint accuses Nafis of having overseas connections to Al Qaeda and travelling to the U.S. in January to recruit individuals to form a terrorist cell and conduct an attack on American soil. He came under the guise of going to school in Missouri on a student visa. One of Nafis potential recruits was an FBI source, who alerted authorities, the FBI said.
A federal law enforcement official told Fox News that there was no evidence Nafis was directed by Al Qaeda to carry out this attack, though he appears to have thought he was working for the terrorist group.At one point, according to criminal complaint, Nafis told undercover agents: “I dont want something thats like, small. I just want something big. Something very big … that will shake the whole country, that will make America, not one step ahead, change of policy, and make one step ahead, for the Muslims … that will make us one step closer to run the whole world.” A U.S. official told Fox News that President Obama was Nafis first target, but the criminal complaint only refers to “a high-ranking official.” The complaint also mentions the New York Stock Exchange as a proposed target.
The FBI cites a written statement obtained from Nafis, in which he said he wanted to “destroy America” and determined that the best way to achieve that goal was to target the economy. He also referenced quotes from “our beloved Sheikh Osama bin Laden”. Nafis appeared in federal court in Brooklyn to face charges of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and attempting to provide material support to Al Qaeda. Wearing a brown T-shirt and black jeans, he was ordered held without bail and did not enter a plea. His defense attorney had no comment outside court. “Attempting to destroy a landmark building and kill or maim untold numbers of innocent bystanders is about as serious as the imagination can conjure,” FBI Acting Assistant Director-in-Charge Galligan said. “The defendant faces appropriately severe consequences”. NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly noted that there have been 15 terrorist plots targeting the city since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. “Al Qaeda operatives and those they have inspired have tried time and again to make New York City their killing field,” Kelly said. “After 11 years without a successful attack, its understandable if the public becomes complacent. But thats a luxury law enforcement can’t afford.”

The Dalai Lama is touring the UK, June 16th- 23rd, after he was invited to the UK by religious groups. His tour began in Manchester, central England, where he spoke to a crowd of mainly under 25 year olds, who were given free tickets to the event. He spent three days in Manchester. On his first day he concentrated on the youth, giving a talk: “Stand Up and Be the Change”. He was welcomed on stage by the British comedian, and ex-husband of Katy Perry, Russell Brand.
When he has finished in Manchester he went to London for a talk in Westminster Abbey, where he was joined by the Dean of Westminster, the Very Rev, Dr John Hall, and the prayer for the “divided communities” in the UK. After the service he had a meeting with Prince Charles, who is a long standing supported of the Dalai Lama. The two men were photographed chatting and holding hands as Prince Charles gave the Dalai Lama a tour of his garden. He then headed north to Scotland, where he has been speaking in Edinburgh, Dundee, and Inverness.
This is an important time in the UK. London is holding the Olympics in August, and this is the year of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

His visit has seen strange manifestations in the weather across the UK, as well as flooding throughout Britain. With the eyes of the world on London this summer, what could the enemy have planned?
Since 9/11 homeland security has been at the top of the political agenda. The threat from Al Qaeda and affiliated groups remains high; and clearly, America’s enemies are not necessarily living in some far off land, but on her very soil. The threat from home grown terrorists is very real.
Consequently the recently passed Bill 1867 National Defence Authorization Act, has integrated national security with homeland security. On the face of things this may appear a good idea, if it keeps America safe. However, the bill has caused widespread alarm due to it’s wider implications.
S 1867 now defines American soil as part of “the battlefield”, and American citizens deemed to be “at war” with America can be detained without charge or trial. The protection offered citizens under the Constitution therefore will be removed.
The language of the bill is so vague it could be open to abuse, and could be used against US citizens; in a worst case scenario paving the way for internment camps.
Such legislation has the appearance of wisdom, but will do very little to protect against the types of terrorist attacks we have seen. What protects a region against destruction is the Presence of God, exposing wickedness, and renewing the minds of those who seek to perpetrate such crimes.
