LAWYERS IN UK WARN CHRISTIANS COULD FACE “LAWFUL EXCLUSION” FROM JOBS.

The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg has ruled concerning three Christians and their rights to express their faith.

The first case involved Nadia Eweida, a British Airways clerk, who won her case to wear a cross at work. Mrs Eweida had faced disciplinary action from British Airways for refusing to stop wearing the cross. Although wearing a cross is not a basic tenant of the Christian faith, the court ruled she had a right to manifest her faith through wearing it.

However the court rejected a similar case from nurse, Shirley Chaplin, on the grounds that wearing a cross was a breach of health and safety regulations.

The ruling means a persons right to manifest their faith can be overridden on grounds of health and safety.

The other two cases brought to the Human Rights Court are of particular concern to Christians and Muslims. They involved Gary McFarlane, a relationships councillor; and Lillian Ladele, a marriage registrar. Mr McFarlane was dismissed after saying he would be unable to provide relationship counselling to same-sex couples on the grounds that it compromised his Christian values.

Miss Ladele was disciplined for asking her employer to be excluded from conducting civil partnerships for same-sex couples on grounds of her faith.

The court in Strasbourg rejected both cases. Paul Lambdin, partner in the employment department at Stevens & Bolton, said, “It appears that those Christians, Muslims and others who disagree with same sex marriage and/or civil partnerships will be excluded from certain jobs.

He added: “These cases demonstrate the difficulty of divorcing a belief from its practice. “The practical effect is that Ms Ladele, Mr McFarlane and others with similar religious convictions may be lawfully excluded from certain jobs.”

Mike Judge, spokesman for The Christian Institute, which supported Miss Ladele, said: “What this case shows is that Christians with traditional beliefs about marriage are at risk of being left out in the cold.

“If the Government steamrollers ahead with its plans to redefine marriage, then hundreds of thousands of people could be thrown out of their jobs unless they agree to endorse gay marriage.”

With the UK government pushing to redefine marriage within the UK, it is likely there will be an increase in cases like those of Mr McFarlane and Miss Ladele.

MALI BASED ISLAMIST REBELS VOW ATTACKS ON FRENCH SOIL

The north western African country of Mali has seen intense fighting in recent months. As armed Islamist rebels, backed by al-Qaeda, have taken much of northern Mali, the French President Francois Hollande has provided troops and heavy air support to help the ill equipped Malian army regain ground taken by the rebels.

Now the Islamist rebels have pledged to attack France on French soil.

“France has attacked Islam. We will strike at the heart of France,” Abou Dardar, a leader of Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO), one of the Mali-based groups with ties to al Qaeda, told the AFP news agency.

Mali is awaiting more support from other African nations, with America and Britain providing logistical support to the offensive.

There are currently around 550 French troops in the country helping the Malian army.

TARANTINO’S RANT OVER VIOLENCE IN NEW MOVIE DJANGO UNCHAINED

In an interview to promote his latest movie Djano Unchained, with the UK program Channel 4 News, director Quentin Tarantino, launched a furious rant on journalist Krishnan Guru-Murthy. Guru-Murthy was asking Tarantino about links between violence in movies and violence in real life. Tarantino refused to answer his questions, becoming increasingly angered by the line of questioning.

Tarantino replied with “It’s none of your damn business what I think about that.”

“I’m saying no, and I’m shutting you down… I don’t have any responsibility to you to explain anything I don’t want to…”

“I’ve explained this many times in 20 years but I just refuse to repeat myself over and over again because you want me to – for you and your show and your ratings.”

The main part in the movie is played by Jamie Foxx, who has been criticised for taking violent roles like, Django, whilst being part of the Hollywood campaign, Demand a Plan, to end gun violence.

In the wake on massacres like Sandy Hook and the Aurora Batman shooting, there is a debate about the effect violent movies have upon vulnerable minds.

WASHINGTON NATIONAL CATHEDRAL TO PERFORM SAME-SEX MARRIAGES

View WASHINGTON NATIONAL CATHEDRAL TO PERFORM SAME-SEX MARRIAGES in a larger map

The National Cathedral in Washington D.C. is to begin performing same-sex marriage ceremonies. The District of Columbia, and the neighbouring state of Maryland, both legalised same-sex marriage last year.

The National Cathedral has a long and illustrious history. Hosting inaugural services and funerals for Presidents. It was also the place Martin Luther King gave his final sermon.

The Cathedral is part of the Episcopalian church. The bishop of Washington DC, the Rt Rev Mariann Edgar Budde, decided in December to allow churches within the diocese to perform same-sex marriages if they wished.

The Dean of the National Cathedral the Very Rev Gary Hall, said he believes allowing same-sex marriages reflects the diversity found in God’s word.

Speaking to the Associated Press, Hall said, “I read the Bible as seriously as fundamentalists do… and my reading of the Bible leads me to want to do this because I think it’s being faithful to the kind of community that Jesus would have us be.”

In theory ceremonies could take place immediately, however it is likely the first marriages will take place within the next 6-12 months, due to the schedule of the Cathedral and the church’s requirement that couples take part in their pre-marriage counselling course.

FRENCH ACTOR GERARD DEPARDIEU BECOMES RUSSIAN CITIZEN TO AVOID 75% TAX RATE

One of the most popular french actors has taken Russian citizenship, to avoid the new tax rate for millionaires in France. French President Francois Hollande is introducing a tax rate of 75% on earnings above €1 million.

The actor Gerard Depardieu became one of many wealthy Frenchmen to quit the country.

The actor, who grew up in a working class family before becoming a successful actor, has said that he has paid millions in taxes over the years and that the new high tax rate is an attack on success.

Depardieu has now taken up Russian citizenship. He flew into Russia today, where he was greeted by the Russian President, Vladimir Putin. Russia has a flat income tax rate of 13%.

Depardieu has worked in Russia in the past, and has previously spoken of possibly taking up Russian citizenship.

Depardieu’s friend Arnaud Frilley told France’s RTL radio: “The President [Francois Hollande] called Gerard to ask if he was really serious about leaving France for good.

Gerard told him it wasn’t the taxes themselves that sickened him, but he was sickened by the way France spits on success. At one point he got very annoyed.

He also said he felt the way the media had treated him was terrible and that he needed to take a step back.

But he did say that he would remain French in his heart and that he felt he was a kind of spokesman for all other successful people like him who had not spoken out.”

2013: EXPECT A RAFT OF NEW ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATIONS

Obama’s Environmental Regulation
During his first term, President Obama was widely critized for the number of new regulations which were introduced. Critics attacked the President for introducing regulations that were hampering business and costing jobs.

However, the President is set to introduce even more regulation in 2013. A report released by the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works Minority Committee, has listed many more Enterprise Prevention Agenda regulations to be passed this year. The reported entitled “A Look Ahead to EPA Regulations for 2013: Numerous Obama EPA Rules Placed on Hold Until After the Election Spell Doom For Jobs and Economic Growth” numerates additional restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions, tougher water guidelines and tightening of the ozone standard. The report explains that these measures would push up taxes for businesses and individuals, as well as cost jobs.

Many environmental groups had hoped Obama would have done more in his first term to help green issues, but President Obama’s former climate czar Carol Browner told several green groups not to worry because “President Obama has a big green ‘to-do’ list for 2013 so they’ll get what they want.”

AMERICA HEADS OVER THE CLIFF

Democrats and Republicans failed to vote on a deal to stop America falling over the fiscal cliff. The $607 billion of tax hikes and spending cuts take effect at midnight.

President Obama said that a deal had been within sight.

It is believed Congress will meet again Tuesday and come up with a deal to reverse the tax hikes and spending cuts, before any serious damage is done.

However, if they fail, it is widely predicted the fiscal cliff will plunge America back into recession, and the global economy into turmoil.

AS FISCAL CLIFF FAST APPROACHES STILL NO DEAL

As the fiscal cliff deadline fast approaches there are still significant differences between law makers on Capitol Hill. It had been hoped that negotiators would have a deal ready to be voted on over the weekend, but this failed to materialize.

Democrats were unhappy about Republican plans to change the way benefits are calculated, leading to a gradual reduction in benefit payments; whereas Republicans were angered that the President’s plans appeared to use increased tax hikes in new spending plans.

“The biggest obstacle we face is that President Obama and Majority Leader Reid continue to insist on new taxes that will be used to fund more new spending, not for meaningful deficit reduction,” said Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions, the ranking Republican on the Senate Budget Committee.

If a deal is not ready to be voted on, the President has told Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid to present a bare bones plan to be voted on. This will see tax increases on families making more than $250,000 and extend unemployment insurance.

Wall Street traders are bracing themselves for volatility in the markets as the uncertainty increases.

100 YEAR OLD DEATHBED DREAMS OF MATHEMATICIAN PROVED TRUE

Over a hundred years ago, a young Indian wrote a letter to the leading mathematician of his time, G. H. Hardy of Cambridge University. Hardy realised that the mathematics in Srinivasa Ramanujan’s letter was brilliant, that the self-taught mathematician from rural India had discovered some of the fundamental theories of mathematics, with no formal training.

Hardy invited Ramanujan to England, and the two men worked together for five years. In those five years Ramanujan set the world of mathematics ablaze with his new and exciting ideas.

However, the English weather took it’s toll on the young Indian, and as his health failed he returned to India. As he lay dying, he wrote to Hardy telling him of mysterious functions he had seen in a dream. The devout Hindu, believed that the goddess Namagiri had shown them to him.

Now a team of mathematicians from Emory University have proved that these functions are true, “We’ve solved the problems from his last mysterious letters. For people who work in this area of math, the problem has been open for 90 years,” Emory University mathematician Ken Ono said.

NY GUNMAN:” KILLING IS WHAT I DO BEST”

The gunman who shot dead two firefighters in upstate New York, left a note saying “Killing is what I do best.”

In the note William Spengler, 62, also said he wanted to burn down his neighbourhood, and kill as many people as possible.

The charred remains of a woman were found in the burned out house, she is believed to be his sister.

Spengler used a Bushmaster semi-automatic rifle, the same used by Adam Lanza in the Sandy Hook Elementary school massacre.

Spengler, convicted of the manslaughter of his grandmother in 1981, was found dead of a self-inflicted gun shot wound hours after the killing of the fire fighters.

HOLLYWOOD COMES OUT IN SUPPORT OF GUN CONTROL

Hollywood stars, including Beyonce, Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Aniston, Jon Hamm, Julianne Moore, and Gwyneth Paltrow, have shot a movie calling for action to be taken now to end gun violence in the US. The campaign slogan is “It’s not too soon, it’s too late”.

The video begins with Jamie Foxx (the star of Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming “Django Unchained”), saying “Columbine”, then other celebrities list the other mass shootings in recent years, ending with a number of the stars saying “Newtown”.

The campaign’s proposals include requiring a background check for every potential gun buyer, banning assault weapons and guns holding more than 10 bullets, and making gun trafficking a federal crime.
