Canada introduced Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) in 2016 for terminally ill patients, but in 2021, the terminal illness requirement was removed. By 2027, eligibility may extend to those with mental illness alone. In 2023, MAID accounted for 15,343 deaths—about one in every 20—making it one of the highest rates globally.
