Sandy has again reached hurricane status as she moves up the east coast of America. Meteorologists now predict she will hit land on Monday possibly in Delaware. Although Sandy is only a category 1 storm, a number of factors are coming into play to intensify the threat of this “super-storm”. Sandy is expected to merge with winter weather coming down from Canada, as well as a high pressure system from Greenland, the full moon is also causing high tides; all the elements are in place for serious damage, extensive power outages, and flooding. Experts are saying Hurricane Sandy is unique. The conditions are creating a “monstrous hybrid vortex”, explained Bryan Norcross, a meteorologist with the Weather Channel.
“We’re not trying to hype it. What we’re seeing in some of our models is a storm at an intensity that we have not seen in this part of the country in the past century,” said Paul Kocin, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
States of emergency have been declared in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, Maine, New Jersey and Connecticut, as well as the District of Columbia. Sandy has already caused 42 deaths in the Caribbean.
