CATHOLIC MINISTRY HOLDS PRAYER SERVICE AT SITES OF SAN FRANCISCO HOMICIDES

Father Dan Nascimento, a Priest from the St. Brendan Parish church based in San Francisco, held a prayer service this Thursday at the location of a recent fatal shooting.

“This is part of our faith,” Escobar said. “Our faith causes us to deal with the dead. Also, our ministries deal with the family members of the dead.”

Escobar also goes on to say “We want to create a support ministry for both victims family members and family members of those who are incarcerated,”

NANNY WHO KILLED CHILDREN HAD BECOME “UNSTABLE”

Yoselyn Ortega who stabbed brother and sister, Lucia and Leo Krim, had allegedly become unstable in recent weeks, and was attending a psychologist. A former neighbour told the media that Ortega had told her she “felt like she was losing her mind.”

The children’s mother arrived home on Thursday evening with her three year old daughter Nessie, to find her six year old daughter and two year old son in the bath, both dead with stab wounds. When Ortega saw Mrs Krim she began to stab herself repeatedly. Neighbours heard the screams from Mrs Krim, and tell how she clung to her remaining daughter. Ortega is still in a critical condition in hospital.

The children’s father, Kevin Krim, a CNBC television executive was away on business when the tragedy occurred.

Neighbours in the Krim’s luxury Manhattan apartment block say Ortega had always greeted them, and had appeared happy, however in recent weeks was more quiet and aloof. It is believe Ortega had financial problems, but was seeking professional help.

Hurricane Sandy Continues to Bear Down on US

Sandy has again reached hurricane status as she moves up the east coast of America. Meteorologists now predict she will hit land on Monday possibly in Delaware. Although Sandy is only a category 1 storm, a number of factors are coming into play to intensify the threat of this “super-storm”. Sandy is expected to merge with winter weather coming down from Canada, as well as a high pressure system from Greenland, the full moon is also causing high tides; all the elements are in place for serious damage, extensive power outages, and flooding. Experts are saying Hurricane Sandy is unique. The conditions are creating a “monstrous hybrid vortex”, explained Bryan Norcross, a meteorologist with the Weather Channel.

“We’re not trying to hype it. What we’re seeing in some of our models is a storm at an intensity that we have not seen in this part of the country in the past century,” said Paul Kocin, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

States of emergency have been declared in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, Maine, New Jersey and Connecticut, as well as the District of Columbia. Sandy has already caused 42 deaths in the Caribbean.

Former Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi Found Guilty of Tax Fraud

The disgraced former Italian Prime Minister was yesterday convicted of tax fraud and sentenced to 4 years in prison, later reduced to 1 year.

Berlusconi left office last year admit the growing sexual scandal around his infamous bunga bunga parties, where it is alleged he had sex with an underage prostitute. The trial in this case continues.

The 76 year old media model, received a suspended sentence in 1996 over false book-keeping, that conviction was later reversed on appeal.

Some had tipped Berlusconi to return to political office.

‘Today We Turned Science Fiction Into Science Fact’: Latest on the New Missile That Can Fry Electronics

Posted on October 24, 2012 at 9:26am by Liz Klimas

Boeing has completed another successful test for technology that fries enemy electronics with little to no collateral damage to other objects. This news comes a little more than a year after TheBlaze reported on Boeing’s previous successes with its Counter-electronics High-powered Microwave Advanced Missile Project (CHAMP).

Boeing describes CHAMP as “a non-kinetic alternative to traditional explosive weapons that use the energy of motion to defeat a target.” In its most recent test that took place last week with the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory Directed Energy Directorate, Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M., over the Utah Test and Training Range, Boeing proved CHAMP could follow a pre-programmed flight plan and wipe out enemy target data and electronic subsystems by emitting high amounts of energy.

“This technology marks a new era in modern-day warfare,” Keith Coleman, CHAMP program manager for Boeing Phantom Works, said in the company’s press release. “In the near future, this technology may be used to render an enemy’s electronic and data systems useless even before the first troops or aircraft arrive.”

Watch this Boeing report on the latest test of the first fully functional CHAMP:

In a recent feature on CHAMP’s latest test, Boeing describes how the missile approached a two-story building, fired high-powered microwaves at it and effectively knocked out the computers and other electrical systems inside. It states that even the cameras that were inside the building to record the test were wiped out.

“Today we turned science fiction into science fact,” Coleman said in Boeing’s feature.

The children’s nanny, who was found with a self-inflicted stab wound, was arrested after the stabbings inside the apartment at 57 West 75th Street, the police said.

One neighbor, who declined to give his name, reported hearing screams around 5:30 p.m., around the time that the children’s mother arrived home from work to find her children, boys ages 6 and 2, stabbed and in a bathtub.

The police declined to provide details about those stabbed. The police said the boys were pronounced dead at St. Luke’s Hospital, where the nanny was in extremely critical condition.

“It’s a chaotic scene,” a fire official said.

Neighbors watched nervously as several of those injured in the stabbing were taken out on stretchers and loaded into ambulances. The entire block, from Central Park West to Columbus Avenue, was shut down by the authorities.

The building, the La Rochelle, a block west of Central Park, is an 11-story prewar complex with grand columns at the entrance.

The Return Of Cable Boxes That Spy On You

from the wave-to-the-camera dept

Remember the outcry last year when a Comcast exec mentioned in passing the idea of a set-top box that would have a built in camera to monitor who and how many people were actually watching the TV? The outcry over that forced Comcast to say that it wasn’t really going to do that, but Broadband Reports points out that the technology behind such a plan is still moving forward — and apparently cable companies are, indeed, interested in it. The idea is that it can show personalized ads and better target content. It’s worth noting that the company behind the system, Prime Sense, seems to be trying to position it for less “scary” apps, such as being able to do “virtual touch” interfaces, so users could interact with menus on the screen without a remote (features found in some video games these days). Still, unless the end user is given total control over what info is recorded and where it’s being sent, this technology seems like a non-starter.

Hurricane Sandy charts Halloween hit on East Coast in ‘perfect storm’ threat

Emergency management teams and utilities along the East Coast are bracing for what could be a $1 billion punch as Hurricane Sandys 100 mph winds barrel toward the heavily populated region between the Carolina coast and Cape Cod.The Category 2 storm, which has killed two in the Caribbean as it swept through Cuba and blew toward the Bahamas, may combine with other, rain-heavy weather systems to create what meteorologists are calling a “perfect storm” that could wreak havoc from North Carolina to Massachusetts early next week. Sandy will likely maintain its hurricane status as it passes over the Bahamas later Thursday and may bring tropical storm conditions along Florida’s southeastern coast by early Friday.“We are taking the forecast seriously.”- Laura Southard, Virginia Department of Emergency ManagementJeff Masters, a meteorologist for Weather Underground, called the hurricane a “perfect storm,” and predicted early next week that it could cause $1 billion or more in damage. In Virginia, where the storm may make landfall as early as this weekend, officials from the state’s Department of Emergency Management are advising residents to make preparations in advance and to closely watch local forecasts.“We are taking the forecast seriously,” VDEM spokeswoman Laura Southard told FoxNews.com. “We are in close contact with the National Weather Service and the National Hurricane Center, so we’re getting the best information we can.”Residents in the storm’s expected path, Southard said, should have a three days’ supply of water on hand, or one gallon per person per day, enough for drinking, cooking and some bathing.“They should have at least a 3-day supply and food that doesn’t need electricity to prepare it,” she said.To combat extended power outages, Southard suggested residents purchase battery-powered radios and extra batteries.“Pay attention,” she said. “Expect that there’s going to be some effect and go ahead and make some preparations.”Southard said state officials likely will add more employees at its emergency center in Richmond beginning on Saturday.“It looks like things are coming together,” she said. “And it never, ever hurts to be prepared.”In New York, Consolidated Edison is warning its 9 million customers in Westchester County and New York City to stay away from any downed power lines if and when the storm strikes the Empire State.“Treat any downed line as if it’s alive,” Con Ed spokesman Christ Olert told FoxNews.com. “Stay away.”Olert advised residents to charge portable devices in advance and to have extra batteries on hand in the event of outages.“We’re watching it and we’ll be prepared,” Con Ed spokesman Chris Olert told FoxNews.com. “We’ll have extra crews available and, if need be, we’ll go to 12-hour shifts.”The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Sandy emerged off Cubas coast early Thursday and was moving north at 18 mph with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph. It was expected to remain a hurricane as it moves through the Bahamas. A tropical storm warning has been extended northward as far as Flagler Beach and a tropical storm watch was issued for the northeastern Florida coast.”Itll be a rough couple days from Hatteras up to Cape Cod,” said forecaster Jim Cisco of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration prediction center in College Park, Maryland. “We dont have many modern precedents for what the models are suggesting.”White House officials, meanwhile, said President Obama has been briefed on Hurricane Sandy and urged people within the storm’s projected path to monitor local weather reports. Federal emergency management officials have been working with local authorities to prepare, spokesman Jay Carney said Thursday.

Google threatens to stop linking to French media sites – INTERNET – FRANCE 24

Internet giant Google has threatened to stop linking to French media sites to protest against a proposed French law that would force search engines to pay for content, sparking an angry reaction from the Socialist government in return. Internet giant Google has warned it would exclude French media sites from its search results if France adopts a law forcing search engines to pay for content, in the latest confrontation with European governments.

A letter sent by Google to several French ministerial offices this month said it “cannot accept” such a move and the company “as a consequence would be required to no longer reference French sites,” according to a copy obtained by AFP.

The French new Socialist government, which is open to helping struggling media companies, warned Google that it should not threaten democratic governments. Google said a law which would require it to make payments to media sites for displaying links to their content, would “threaten Googles very existence”.

It also noted that Google “redirects four billion clicks per month towards the Internet pages” of French media. However, the media have had difficulty benefitting from the Google traffic, as online readers resist paying for access when so much content is free on the Internet.  Newspapers around the world have seen their bottom line come under pressure, as their print advertising revenues slide with more people reading news online.

Google takes in tens of billions of dollars annually as companies seek to advertise their wares as Internet users search for content.  Leading French newspaper publishers last month called on the government to adopt a law imposing a settlement in the long-running dispute with Google, forcing it and other search engines to share some of the advertising revenue from user searches for news contained on media websites.  Their demand follows the German government approval in August of draft legislation that would force search engines to pay commissions to German media websites.

Italian Scientists Jailed for Failing to Warn About Earthquake

In 2009 a deadly earthquake hit the Italian town of L’Aquila, leaving 300 dead. Now an Italian judge has sentenced seven of Italy’s top seismologists to six years each in jail for for manslaughter, because they failed to provide adequate warning of the quake.

The trial has sent shockwaves through the scientific community around the globe. Seismology is far from an exact science, and Italy is located on a geologically active area. It is feared the conviction will discourage scientists involved in the prediction of natural disasters to give their opinions in the future.

From the Desk of Donald Trump: “I have a deal for the President that he can’t refuse”

American billionaire, Donald Trump, today offered Barack Obama a check for $5 million to his choice of charities, if he would show his college and passport records.

“We know very little about our president… President Obama is the least transparent president in the history of this country” Trump stated. “I have a deal for the president.  If Barack Obama opens up and gives his college records and applications, and if he gives his passport applications and records, I will give to a charity of his choice – inner city children in Chicago, American Cancer Society, AIDS research – anything he wants – a check immediately for $5 million,”

Trump states he wants to end the question….. and anger of “many Americans”, presumably about the status of Barack Obama’s eligibility for Presidency.

Giant Phallic Symbol/Statue in works for San Francisco

San Francisco Transbay Tower Base

San Francisco Transbay Tower

The Transbay Tower will be the tallest building/phallic symbol in San Francisco after receiving final approval by the Planning Commission.

The latest design adds nighttime lighting, allowing it to be a more distinct skyline feature of the city, particularly in the dark.

Sfist.com, a website focused on anything San Francisco, states the obvious.  The building’s latest design tweaks, when viewed from a distance look… like a vibrator.  When viewing the base, it looks like something else that most would describe officially and politely as phallic or phallus related.

Fred Clarke the architect with Pelli Clarke Pelli, described wanting to create something (buddhist)… or “Zen-like” simple.

Construction would start in 2013 if the developer is able to purchase the land from the Transbay Joint Powers Authority.
