The United Lodge of Theosophists – or ULT for short – is not a Theosophical Society and it is not the Theosophical Society. It is an entirely independent, unaffiliated, and voluntary association of students of Theosophy who wish to study the original teachings without the unnecessary elements of organisations, leaders, political conflicts, and attention seeking personalities. Its expressed mission statement is “To spread broadcast the original teachings of Theosophy as recorded in the writings of H.P. Blavatsky and William Q. Judge.” The ULT was founded in 1909 by Robert Crosbie, who had been a close colleague and associate of Mr Judge, and has since spread all around the world. It is in essence a School of Theosophy, with the only Teachers being HPB and WQJ, who were Founders together of the Theosophical Movement in 1875. Everyone in the ULT is a student; none are “teachers.” Theosophists meet together at ULT Lodges and Study Groups in order to study and apply in their lives the deep and profound spiritual teachings of the Great Soul who gave the esoteric philosophy of Theosophy to the world – H.P. Blavatsky. William Quan Judge was her trusted colleague and co-worker, who she referred to at the end of her life as her “only friend.” It is the original and genuine teachings of Theosophy that are upheld in the ULT; Theosophy as taught by HPB and her Indian Masters of the Trans-Himalayan Brotherhood, who stated that she was their “Direct Agent” and their “Brother.” It is the aim and purpose of the ULT to preserve and promote what HPB called “pure Theosophy,” free from the multitude of alterations, distortions, deceptions, and dilutions introduced by many later “teachers” after HPB and WQJ had departed from the physical plane. Since the ULT is not an “organisation” in the ordinary sense of the word, it does not have members or membership. But individuals who feel in harmony with the purposes and work of the Lodge may choose to become an “Associate” through signing what is known as the Associate’s Card, a simple act of outward observance of an inner commitment to the great Theosophical Cause. Nothing is expected or required of those who become Associates, nor does becoming an Associate confer any benefits or special privileges. The approach of the ULT is largely impersonal and anonymous. Its Associates and friends do not seek attention, fame, or reverence for themselves but wish to draw attention only to Theosophy itself, since they firmly believe that the answer to every question and solution to every problem is contained within those priceless teachings from the Ageless Wisdom of the East. First and foremost, the ULT seeks to fulfill the primary object for which the Theosophical Movement was founded – the actualisation of Universal Brotherhood, which is not merely a lofty ideal but is eternally a fact in Nature. This is the Oneness and Divineness of all life.
