CONFIDENTIAL REPORT INTO CYBER SPYING REVEALS CHINESE HACKERS ACCESSED U.S. WEAPONS SYSTEMS DESIGNS

There have been many reports in recent months about the systematic approach Chinese hackers have taken to access sensitive US information. These cyber attacks have been against US business, governmental and military agencies.

A confidential report has now revealed that the Chinese hackers have compromised weapons designs.

The Chinese military have been seeking to modernise their weapons systems and challenge the military superiority of the US. Experts believe one of their tactics has been to steal military secrets to use in the advancement of their own military technology.

Senior members of the military with knowledge of the latest wave of cyber attacks have said the vast majority have been carried out by the Chinese. These attacks have prompted President Obama to step up the rhetoric against China, warning them to stop the rampant cybertheft.

CHINA AND BRAZIL TO STOP TRADING IN DOLLAR AHEAD OF BRICS SUMMIT

Ahead of the BRICS summit in South Africa, China and Brazil have struck a deal which will see the two emerging economies trade in each others currencies, and not the dollar.

The deal amounts to around $30 billion per year, and is the most significant step the nations have taken to shift the dynamics of global trade away from the dollar.

The BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, China, India and South Africa) have long sought to change the balance of global trade away form the dollar, which is presently the global reserve currency.

The BRICS summit will also discuss the formation of a new International Development Bank, which they hope will serve as an alternative to the World Bank. The BRICS leaders argue that the establishment of a new development bank would make the global banking system more democratic.

CHINA’S MILITARY HACKING US GOVERNMENT AGENCIES AND BUSINESSES REPORT FINDS

A report by Mandiant, an American computer security company, has detailed the extent of Chinese government backed hacking of America.

Mandiant spent three years compiling evidence and now claim to have located the Chinese Liberation Army’s global hacking HQ. A 12 story building in a suburb of Shanghai, has been identified as the possible source of state funded cyber attacks, the report claims.

The report details how Chinese cyber attacks have targetted US businesses as well as government agencies. The hackers have been stealing sensitive corporate information, and have even gained access to government agencies which control fundamental US infrastructure. Theoretically, hackers could manipulate crucial infrastructure including water supply and power grids.

Jay Carney, a spokesman for the White House, said: “We have repeatedly raised our concerns at the highest levels about cyber theft with senior Chinese officials including in the military and we will continue to do so.”

Sen Diane Finestein has also said that the problem of hacking from China and other states requires further legislation. However, security experts have pointed out that international laws are already in place that prohibit such activities, and that China has repeatedly failed to tackle the problem of hacking within it’s country.

The Chinese government has been quick to attack the Mandiant report, saying it lacks technical proof.

US Chamber of Commerce Hacked

Internet hackers have hacked into the US Chamber of Commerce computer systems. The attack appears to have been undetected for more than a year, and targeted four individuals computers who held sensitive information concerning trade in Asia.

Such attacks are not uncommon apparently. China has been found responsible for hacking governmental, military and industry targets in the past. America’s cyber security systems are proving inadequate to cope in this new era of cyberwarfare. However, the US military are taking the threat very seriously and are recruiting 10,000 “cyber warriors” to help defend America and her interests.

China’s Own Debt Mountain

As China chides the West for our mountains of debt, they have an inconvenient truth of their own. Decades ago China began to sell sovereign bonds to the West. However, for the last 60 years they have refused to pay bondholders back, not even the interest!

Britain managed to broker a deal with China as part of their agreement over Hong Kong, which ensured China pay back their debts to the UK, however the rest has remained unpaid.  Consequently China owes $750 billion to America, and several trillion dollars globally! This ought to be termed as a “selective default”, however the ratings agency choses to look at it differently.

The consequences of this fudge of the rules means China continues to pay nothing on these debts, but demands the rest of the world to pay theirs.

America pays her debts. She asks China to do likewise.

Obama Meets With the Dalai Lama in the White House

The following article was taken from the BBC website:

US President Barack Obama has held private talks with the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, despite strong criticism from China.

Mr Obama told the Dalai Lama of his “strong support” for human rights in Tibet, a White House statement said.

Beijing released an angry statement saying the meeting had damaged relations between the two countries.

Mr Obama’s last meeting with the Dalai Lama in February 2010 also drew strong condemnation from Beijing.

The talks – which lasted about 45 minutes – were held in the Map Room rather than the Oval Office, which is traditionally reserved for visiting heads of state.

“The president reiterated his strong support for the preservation of the unique religious, cultural and linguistic traditions of Tibet and the Tibetan people throughout the world,” the White House statement said.

“He underscored the importance of the protection of human rights of Tibetans in China.”

Mr Obama also reiterated that the US considers Tibet to be part of China, and said that he encouraged “direct dialogue to resolve long-standing differences”.

The closed-door meeting came just hours before the Dalai Lama was scheduled to leave Washington at the end of an 11-day Buddhist ritual.

China had earlier warned the US not to receive the Dalai Lama.

“Such an act has grossly interfered in China’s internal affairs, hurt the feelings of Chinese people and damaged the Sino-American relations,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said in a written statement following the meeting.

“We demand the US side to seriously consider China’s stance, immediately adopt measures to wipe out the baneful impact, stop interfering in China’s internal affairs and cease to connive and support anti-China separatist forces that seek ‘Tibet independence’,” Mr Ma said.

The White House has not commented on Beijing’s displeasure.

The Chinese authorities have long vilified the Dalai Lama as a “splittist”, although he has repeatedly stated that his goal is for meaningful Tibetan autonomy rather than independence.

Chinese still views America the enemy

On the face of it relations between America and China appear to have never been better. More and more trade happens between the two nations, and it could be said diplomatic relations appear cordial.

However, America should not become complacent. This week at the international Hay literary festival in England, highly acclaimed Chinese writer Xiaolu Guo has spoken about China’s view of America, and how the nation still views the US as her enemy.

Chinese children are taught to study American culture, by reading celebrated works of American literature, like Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye. The thinking behind such studying, is that America is the best, the most powerful nation in the world; so to be better than them you must understand them fully. Guo explained, “The mentality is if you want to be number one in the world, you need to become them [your enemy] first …you need to have the same capacity as the enemy.”

It is interesting to note that whilst many Western nations are currently cutting back hard in defence budgets, and many calling for America to slash her defence spending; China is repeatedly raising there defence spending.

Dialogue between these two economic powerhouses is good, but America cannot afford to be complacent or naive about China and her governments agenda.
