A 4.8 magnitude earthquake rocked the Northeast Friday morning. The earthquake was centered near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, and shook buildings from Philadelphia to New Jersey and New York City to Connecticut and Westchester, New York. It could be felt as far south as Washington, D.C., and as far north as Maine, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The Ridgecrest earthquake back in July has shown how a relatively small quake can trigger faults over a wider area. The Ridgecrest quake has seen over 24 faults rupture.
Ridgecrest started with three separate quakes, which released enough energy to trigger a 6.4 sized quake. The following day there were 4 additional quakes which then triggered a 7.1 sized quake.
“The geometry of this fault network is just incredibly complicated,” said Zachary Ross, Caltech assistant professor of geophysics. “These faults are unmapped … many of them are at right angles to each other; they’re cross-cutting each other. In the central portion of it, they are spaced a few kilometers apart, like dominoes. There’s 20 of them in a row. This 7.1 ripped through all of these.”

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake hit southern California. The epicentre was a few kilometres from the Naval Air Weapons Station at China Lake, Ridgecrest. The weapons station is the Navy’s largest land holding facility of weapons and armaments research, development, acquisition, testing and evaluation.
The region in the Mojave desert is sparsely populated. There were no injuries, but buildings and roads sustained varying degrees of damage. The earthquake is the largest to hit the region in 20 years, and was felt over 100 miles away in Santa Barbara.

The San Francisco area was hit with the strongest quake in 25 years. The 6.0 magnitude earthquake hit in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The power was out in Napa, only 6 miles away from the earthquakes epicentre, affecting over 10,000 households, and some cellphone networks were down. California’s Highway 12 was also damaged, with areas of the highway buckled by the quake. There was damage to buildings in Napa. There were no fatalities in the quake.

Today a tsunami hit the Solomon Islands after a series of earthquakes shook the region in the last few days. The earthquake which set off the tsunami was rated at a magnitude of 8.0. Currently there are 4 people confirmed dead, but there are also unconfirmed reports of fishing boats being swept out to sea.
At least 100 homes were also destroyed. Most followed the advice of warnings and made it to higher ground in central Lata, Santa Cruz Islands, Solomon Islands before the waves hit.
Tsunami warning sirens also went off in New Zealand and Fiji which indicated a three foot rise in the levels of the ocean.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has now lifted the tsunami warning which was limited to the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu, New Caledonia, Kosrae, Fiji, Kiribati, and Wallis and Futuna.
There was also a lesser alert, a tsunami watch, issued for American Samoa, Australia, Guam, the Northern Marianas, New Zealand and eastern Indonesia.
A magnitude 6.3 earthqukae has been felt off the coast of California. The Earthquake centered offshore near Baja, California.
The quake was felt in Mexico, however there were no casualties. The initial quake was followed by a series of weaker after shocks.
In 2009 a deadly earthquake hit the Italian town of L’Aquila, leaving 300 dead. Now an Italian judge has sentenced seven of Italy’s top seismologists to six years each in jail for for manslaughter, because they failed to provide adequate warning of the quake.
The trial has sent shockwaves through the scientific community around the globe. Seismology is far from an exact science, and Italy is located on a geologically active area. It is feared the conviction will discourage scientists involved in the prediction of natural disasters to give their opinions in the future.

In the early hours of Monday morning LA was hit by a small, 3.3 magnitude earthquake. The quake was centred on Beverly Hills. The quake seems to have left no damage.
Beverly Hills is located on the West Beverly Hills Lineament, this is connected to the Newport-Inglewood Fault System that caused the second deadliest quake in California’s history.
This week saw the arrest of the Mobster James “Whitney” Bulger in Santa Monica. The gangster, with Mafia connections, had been on the FBI’s most wanted list for 16 years. FBI agents were amazed to find the gangster so far from his home city of Boston.
