PARIS RIOTS AFTER GAY MARRIAGE VOTE

Police fought running battles with protesters in central Paris last night after the French parliament approved legislation authorising same-sex couples to marry and to adopt children.
The vote, which made France the fourteenth country in the world to legalise gay marriage, was hailed by supporters as an epoch-defining commitment to equality. But it sparked fury among opponents.
As protest marches turned violent, stones, bottles and iron bars rained down on riot police units brought in to protect parliament.

PARIS TO SEE LARGE SCALE PROTESTS AGAINST SAME-SEX MARRIAGE BILL

Tens of thousands are expected to take to the street of Paris today to protest against the government’s bill to legalise same-sex marriage and gay adoption.

The parliament are expected to pass the bill on Tuesday. The bill was one of President Hollande’s key manifesto promises.

This latest protest is expected to see between 30,000 to 50,000 protesters converge on the streets of Paris; a similar rally in March saw around 300,000 people attend.

Protesters are angered by the way the government has pushed the bill through parliament, using a fast track procedure, which means the bill has only received 25 hours of debate.

Another protest is planned for May 26th, to demand the bill be withdrawn and a referendum called on same-sex marriage.

NEW REPORT URGES FOR MORE LGBT’S TO BE SEEN ON TV

In the UK, the BBC commissioned a report into the portrayal of homosexuals and lesbians on television. The report found that only 50% of the population were comfortable with same-sex relationships within programming.

The report recommends that more programs feature lesbian and gay relationships, as well as suggesting children’s programs should be used to familiarise audiences to same-sex couples.

The study found that heterosexual men believed that there were already too many gay and lesbian people on television, but gay and lesbian people surveyed said they believed they were under represented.

It also suggested that drama was a “powerful tool” to educate people, but that comedy could pose a problem as LGBT people are often the focus of jokes.

FRENCH DOCUMENTARY ABOUT GAY SENIORS AIRS AS FRANCE DECIDES ON GAY MARRIAGE

Sébastien Lifshitz’s “Les Invisibles” (“The Invidables”) is a documentary about the lives of elderly homosexual and lesbian couples in France. The documentary is released this week at a time France is gripped by the debate about same-sex marriage and gay adoption.

The documentary looks at the lives of gay men and women and how they explored their sexuality through a time that same-sex marriage was not in the public consciousness.

Lifshitz has made name for himself creating gay-themed documentaries. Although he argues “Les Invisables” is not about the national debate in France surrounding same-sex marriage, he agrees his documentary is his contribution to the conversation.

French lawmakers are set to vote on same-sex marriage in a few months time.

California outlaws gay-to-straight therapies

California Governor Jerry Brown has signed into law a ban on gay-to-straight therapy which focuses on minors.

This therapy is also called “conversion therapy” which seeks to change a person’s feelings away from an LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) orientation.

The American Psychiatric Association says that these types of therapies do more harm than good and cite their research showing those who have been subjected to it have an increased risk of suicide, anxiety, depression and other self-destructive type behaviors.

In signing the law Governor Brown stated “This bill bans nonscientific ‘therapies’ that have driven young people to depression and suicide,”.

Possible motives of accused D.C shooter identified

Floyd Lee Corkins II of Herndon Virginia, has been charged with federal firearms violations and assault with intent to kill.

Last Wednesday, Corkins entered the Washington DC downtown office of the Family Research Council, pulled out a 9-mm gun from his backpack and started shooting.

According to the FBI, Corkins’ stated “I don’t like your politics,” prior to the shooting.  After being wrestled to the ground by a security guard, Corkin also said “… it was not about you, it was what this place stands for”, Fox News reported.

Despite Corkin’s apparent attempts to wreak wider havoc, he was unable to get past security at the Conservative nonprofit organization.

The Family Research Council’s website indicates they seek to advance “faith, family and freedom in public policy and public opinion”.  They oppose gay marriage and abortion, have lobbied federally on behalf of these issues and have supported Chick-fil-A’s president Dan Cathy and his recent remarks on the gay marriage issue.

Corkins is a volunteer with the DC center for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Community.  He also was carrying sandwiches from Chick-fil-A in addition to 50 rounds of ammunition.

SAN FRANCISCO – This last Monday, LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender) activists prevented the San Francisco Supervisors Committee from continuing business.  That business was to approve a permit for another business to replace a business that shut down 3 months ago.

The problem, the new business is not gay.

The old business, the Eagle Tavern.  The Eagle Tavern has been a hub of sorts for the Folsom Street Fair and its openly displayed sensuality.  Many politicians hoping to win the gay vote have also made the Eagle Tavern an obligatory stop.

Openly homosexual Supervisors Scott Wiener and David Campos added their agreement.

BBC News – Does the internet do more harm than good to the gay community?

BBC News – Does the internet do more harm than good to the gay community?.

To mark gay pride week, the food company Kraft made a rainbow colored Oreo cookie, which they posted on their Facebook page.

Although most of the 20,000 comments on the post were positive some were negative, with customers pledging never to buy the product again. Others questioned why a cookie company was championing gay rights.

The negative comments have sparked a debate about “homophobia” on the internet.

This was followed by the negative tweets and comments hip hop star Frank Ocean attracted, after revealing his sexuality in his blog.

With the homosexual community citing these as examples of proof that the web is homophobic, has the web not done more to promote LGBT liberation than any other medium?

Are we now going to see the powerful LGBT lobbying groups push to censor the web?

We have already seen Google launch a campaign to promote gay rights across the globe.

Where could this end?
