CHINA AND BRAZIL TO STOP TRADING IN DOLLAR AHEAD OF BRICS SUMMIT

Ahead of the BRICS summit in South Africa, China and Brazil have struck a deal which will see the two emerging economies trade in each others currencies, and not the dollar.

The deal amounts to around $30 billion per year, and is the most significant step the nations have taken to shift the dynamics of global trade away from the dollar.

The BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, China, India and South Africa) have long sought to change the balance of global trade away form the dollar, which is presently the global reserve currency.

The BRICS summit will also discuss the formation of a new International Development Bank, which they hope will serve as an alternative to the World Bank. The BRICS leaders argue that the establishment of a new development bank would make the global banking system more democratic.

CYPRUS SECURES THE €10 BN BAILOUT IT REQUIRES TO AVOID BANKRUPTCY

In a last minute deal Cyprus managed to secure the €10 bn bailout it requires to avoid bankruptcy. The Cypriot parliament agreed on a deal which will see bank deposits over €100,000 taxed. The troubled Laiki Bank will also be wound up, and split into two parts a “good” bank and a “bad” bank. The largest Cypriot bank, the Bank of Cyprus, will undergo major restructuring. Deposits in the Bank of Cyprus over €100,000 have now been frozen.

It is believed the levy on bank deposits will be around 30%. The Cypriot finance minister said they were keen to protect individuals and small depositors. The majority of account holders with over €100,000 are wealthy Russians. The deal has angered Moscow, who have accused the eurozone of using the crisis to go after Russian money.

Laiki and Bank of Cyprus remain closed with ATM withdrawals limited to €100 a time.

LESBIAN COUSIN OF CHIEF JUSTICE JOHN ROBERTS TO ATTEND THE PROP. 8 HEARING

As the Supreme Court convenes to hear the arguments in the Proposition 8 case, it has emerged the lesbian cousin of Chief Justice John Roberts will be attending. Jean Podrasky, from San Francisco, will be sitting in the area reserved for friends and families during Tuesday’s hearing.

Podrasky has a very personal interest in the case, she wants to marry her partner Grace Fasano, and has campaigned against prop 8.

Podrasky has said previously in an interview with Fortune magazine that she would never ask her cousin his views on gay marriage, out of respect. Chief Justice John Roberts and Jean Podrasky only meet occasionally at family functions.

The Supreme Court is expected to make it’s ruling on the prop 8 case in late June, at the same time it delivers it’s verdict on the DOMA case, also being heard this week.

CYPRUS IS RUNNING OUT OF TIME TO SECURE BAILOUT

The troubled island nation of Cyprus is running out of time to secure a bailout form it’s eurozone partners this weekend. If it fails to secure the bailout the nation will default on it’s debts, and will go bankrupt. Cyprus needs to raise 5.8 billion euros ($7.5 billion) in order to secure 10 billion euros in loans form the eurozone.

Lawmakers in Nicosia have rejected a plan to raise part of the 5.8 billion euros ($7.5 billion), by taxing private bank accounts. The banks in Cyprus have been closed all week, and the ECB has told Cyprus to keep them closed until Tuesday, in order to prevent a run on the banks. However, Cypriots have spent the week queuing at ATMS to withdraw as much of their money as possible, fearful of what the government may do.

The European Central Bank has told Cyprus they will not continue to provide emergency funding past Monday, if a plan is not in place to secure the 5.8 billion euros.

The uncertainty has caused stock markets to fall throughout Europe. Russia has been angered by the prospect of bank accounts being taxed, as Cyprus is a favourite place for Russians to do business. However, Germans will be unwilling to be seen to bail out wealthy Russian oligarchs. Cyprus and Russia currently do $¼ trillion of business annually, and Cyprus has debt repayments of $53 billion annually to Moscow. The close business ties between the two nations has led many to speculate that Russia will offer to bailout Cyprus, if Europe will not.

Lawmakers are looking at ways to restructure the countries ailing banks. It looks likely that Laiki Bank will close, with it’s assets moved to other banks. Laiki Bank has suffered heavy loses due to it’s exposure to the Greek debt crisis.

FRENCH LABOR MINISTER: FRANCE “TOTALLY BANKRUPT”

The French labor minister, Michel Sapin, caused a stir on Monday when he described the country as “totally bankrupt” during a radio interview.

The comments will cause yet more embarrassment for French President Francois Hollande.

“There is a state but it is a totally bankrupt state,” Mr Sapin said. “That is why we had to put a deficit reduction plan in place, and nothing should make us turn away from that objective.”

The French government are seeking to reduce their massive deficit through a mixture of spending cuts and tax hikes.

The tax hikes are already causing a capital flight, as the wealthy leave the country to avoid Hollande’s proposed 75% tax rate on the wealthy.

IT IS CLAIMED DAVID CAMERON’S WIFE IS “DRIVING FORCE” BEHIND GAY MARRIAGE PUSH IN THE UK

As British Prime Minister David Cameron continues to push ahead with his government’s plans to legalise same-sex marriage in the UK, many in his party are feeling alienated. The majority of grass roots Conservatives are opposed to the plan.

A minister has now suggested the driving force behind the policy is the Prime Minister’s wife, Samantha Cameron.

Mrs Cameron is the daughter of a baronet, and is known for her socially liberal views. She is said to be horrified by the socially conservative views of America’s Republicans.

The suggestion came out, at the same time as Mandrake asked David Cameron’s mother why her son was so determined to go ahead with a policy, that so many conservatives are opposed to. Mary Cameron, a former Justice of the Peace, replied, “I know, but David just won’t be told.”

SCIENTIFIC PROOF: SMOKING WEED HAS COGNITIVE AND PSYCHOMOTOR EFFECTS

Advocates of cannabis use as a recreational drug have long argued that it is safe. However, a new study has shown that smoking weed has a negative effect on brain function.

The main active constituent in canabis is Delta(9)-Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The study looked at the effect of increasing the dose of Delta(9)-Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), combined with tobacco, on users compared with the control group who did not smoke cannabis. Before now no one had studied the effects of increased levels of Delta(9)-Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) on behaviour.

As the strength of weed increases, and as some states have now legalised recreational cannabis use the study is very timely.

The results showed that users showed worsening motor skills and processing times. The study warned that consequently recreational cannabis use poses a public health and safety issue.

The annual gathering of the world’s most influential has began in Davos, Switzerland. It is thought there will be around 50 world leaders attending, including Russian President Dmitri Medvedev, British Prime Minister David Cameron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti. There will also be leaders from the media, business, and academia.

In the run up to the conference the founder of the World Economic Forum, Professor Klaus Schwab, has said the mood this year is more optimistic than last, but has warned that the global economy could still collapse if more is not done to promote growth.

On the agenda will be the continuing eurozone crisis, the US Fiscal Cliff, weak economic growth, soaring national debts, and the latest stimulus program in Japan.

The World Economic Forum seeks to promote a global governance platform to address the global issues that national governments alone can not tackle.

SENATOR ELIZABETH WARREN WINS SEAT ON BANKING COMMITTEE

Elizabeth Warren is widely regarded as one of the strongest progressive voices in the Senate. She received widespread praise from Democrates at the Democratic Convention and went on to win Massachusetts from Republican Sen. Scott Brown.

The fight became the most expensive to be fought over in the election. Wall Street donated heavily to Scott Brown’s campaign, keen to stop Warren from winning. Now Wall Street will have Sen Warren on the banking committee. The powerful committee has the job of overseeing the implementation of the Dodd-Frank bill and other banking regulations.

SYRIA: ASSAD COULD BE GETTING READY TO USE CHEMICAL WEAPONS

As the civil war continues in Syria, there are renewed fears that Bashar al-Assad may use Chemical Weapons against his own people.

Secretary of State Hilary Clinton said at a press conference after a meeting with NATO leaders, “Our concerns are that an increasingly desperate Assad regime might turn to chemical weapons, or might lose control of them to one of the many groups that are now operating within Syria… And so as part of the absolute unity that we all have on this issue we have sent an unmistakable message that this would cross a red line and those responsible would be held to account.”

The United States has pledged support for the Syrian opposition. There will be a meeting in Morocco next week to discuss what further steps need to be undertaken to help resolve the conflict in Syria.

UN VOTES TO GRANT PALESTINE NON-MEMBER OBSERVER STATUS

The UN has voted overwhelmingly in favour of granting Palestine non-member observer status- 138 in favor, 9 against, 41 abstentions. Israel had threatened before the vote to retailed with financial penalties if the vote was passed.

The move in effect recognises Palestinian statehood, and will give them access to a number of different bodies, like the International Criminal Court.

Before the vote Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas had told the General Assembly that it “is being asked today to issue the birth certificate of Palestine.”

MASSIVE BLACK HOLE DISCOVERED BAFFLES ASTRONOMERS

Astronomers have discovered a massive black hole, the second biggest ever observed. What is unusual about the discovery is the black hole’s location. Black holes are found at the centre of galaxies, and this one has been discovered at the centre of NGC 1277. NGC 1277 is a tiny galaxy, a quarter of the size of our own Milky Way. This new black hole has a mass 17 billion times bigger than our Sun, and is thought to be the size of our Solar System, comprising of 14% of NGC 1277 total mass. And this is what makes the discovery unique.

Current understanding about black hole behaviour tells us that the size of the black hole is linked to the stellar velocities within the galaxy. A galaxy the size of NGC 1277 should not have stellar velocities high enough to create a black hole of this size. Astronomers have never seen anything like it, the discovery goes against what they previously believed about black hole evolution.

An average black hole will have a mass around 1000 time that of the sun, within a size no bigger than the earth.

Astronomers will be studying NGC 1277 closely to see what new knowledge they can learn about the behaviour of black holes.

FRENCH DOCUMENTARY ABOUT GAY SENIORS AIRS AS FRANCE DECIDES ON GAY MARRIAGE

Sébastien Lifshitz’s “Les Invisibles” (“The Invidables”) is a documentary about the lives of elderly homosexual and lesbian couples in France. The documentary is released this week at a time France is gripped by the debate about same-sex marriage and gay adoption.

The documentary looks at the lives of gay men and women and how they explored their sexuality through a time that same-sex marriage was not in the public consciousness.

Lifshitz has made name for himself creating gay-themed documentaries. Although he argues “Les Invisables” is not about the national debate in France surrounding same-sex marriage, he agrees his documentary is his contribution to the conversation.

French lawmakers are set to vote on same-sex marriage in a few months time.
