If You Use a Ring Doorbell, Facebook Is Tracking You

The Electronic Frontier Foundation says Ring’s Android app is sending your data to Facebook.

Most people realize that Facebook tracks what you do online so that it can serve you targeted ads. They may not like it, but they sort of accept that the price of a free social media platform is a little bit of privacy. Most people have come to accept that even though it’s a little creepy that you see ads for the items you were just looking at on Amazon in your Facebook News Feed, it’s not that big a deal.

What most people don’t realize is just how much information Facebook collects not just about what you do on the world’s largest social media site, but what you do on other websites and in the apps on your smartphone. In fact, according to the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), a privacy advocacy group, that tracking includes what you do with the Ring doorbell app for your Android device.

Ring is owned by Amazon, which did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

According to EFF’s report, the Ring app for Android sends information via Facebook’s Graph.API, including “time zone, device model, language preferences, screen resolution, and a unique identifier (anon_id), which persists even when you reset the OS-level advertiser ID.” In addition, the fact that Ring is sending data to Facebook is not included in the app’s current privacy policy.

As the second-largest advertising platform, Facebook’s tracking code is found in many of the apps you use every day, and it is notorious for being one of the biggest culprits when it comes to collecting your personal information. That’s true even if you don’t use Facebook’s app, or even have a Facebook account.

‘Can you post a meme?’: Facebook changes ad rules after Bloomberg exploits loophole

Policy change involves what Facebook calls ‘branded content’, sponsored items posted by ordinary users who are typically paid by companies

Facebook decided on Friday to allow a type of paid political message that had sidestepped many of the social network’s rules governing political ads, in a reversal that highlights difficulties tech companies and regulators have in keeping up with the changing nature of paid political messages.

Facebook’s policy change comes days after the Democratic presidential candidate Mike Bloomberg exploited a loophole to run humorous messages promoting his campaign on the accounts of popular Instagram personalities followed by millions of younger people.

TV Presenter Jorge Ramos: “Mexico is Now the Wall”

Univision TV host Jorge Ramos wrote in the New York Times, under the headline “Trump Got His Wish. Mexico Is Now the Wall”:

Mexico has effectively turned into an extension of Mr. Trump’s immigration police beyond American territory. And this is the case on multiple fronts: On the southern border with Guatemala, they prevent Central American migrants from coming into Mexico; on the northern one, they block those seeking entry to the United States from leaving. The decision of Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, also known as AMLO, to follow this approach is misguided. He should let migrants continue their journey north….. Everything changed because of Donald Trump. By mid-2019, a number of Central American caravans were traveling across Mexico. The president, comparing them to an invasion, warned Mexico that they should do something to stop them, and that he would slap tariffs on all Mexican imports if it didn’t…..

That’s why I am surprised by the indifference shown by so many Mexicans over the abuses of the National Guard and the vicious attacks on social media aimed at Central Americans. Those xenophobic comments remind me of those I have been hearing for decades here in the United States, and of the appalling mistreatment of Mexican immigrants in recent years. Such abuses should not be forgotten or used to justify a similar treatment of migrants in Mexico.

Pompeo: China Seeks to “Exploit” American Freedoms to Infiltrate and Influence National and Local Government

Secretary of State  Pompeo has said in a recent address that the Chinese are seeking to infiltrate and influence state and local politics.

“While there are places we can cooperate, we can’t ignore China’s actions and strategic intentions. If we do, we risk the important components of our relationship that benefit both countries,” Pompeo said. “The Chinese Government has been methodical in the way it’s analyzed our system, our very open system, one that we’re deeply proud of. It’s assessed our vulnerabilities, and it’s decided to exploit our freedoms to gain advantage over us at the federal level, the state level, and the local level.”

New York State To Sue Trump Administration Over Trusted Traveler Restrictions

The Trump administration’s attempt to block New Yorkers from enrolling in trusted traveler programs is heading for court.

On Friday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the New York Civil Liberties Union announced their intention to file lawsuits against the Department of Homeland Security. DHS said this week that it will no longer allow New York state residents to sign up for popular programs intended to speed up international travel because of a state law that blocks immigration authorities from accessing motor vehicle records.

“You can’t do that. It’s an abuse of power. It is extortion,” Cuomo said at a press conference announcing the lawsuit.

New York’s “Green Light” law allows immigrants in the country illegally to apply for driver’s licenses. More than a dozen other states do the same. But New York’s law goes further: it prohibits the state’s DMV from sharing information with immigration authorities, unless a judge orders them to.

BREAKING: Trump Wins AGAIN As Court Throws Out Dems’ Emoluments Lawsuit

On Friday, President Trump scored another victory, as a three-judge panel ruled against congressional Democrats, dismissing their emoluments lawsuit, the first case where they sued Trump, that alleged Trump violated the emoluments clause of the Constitution, arguing he had done so because his ownership of certain businesses meant that he was receiving payments from foreign officials without approval from Congress.

The Emoluments Clause of the Constitution states, “no person holding any office … shall, without the consent of Congress” accept gifts or other benefits from foreign states.

Democrats had issued over 35 subpoenas demanding a response from the Trump administration by July 29 after Emmet Sullivan of the US District Court in Washington ruled in January that they could continue with the legal discovery process, but then the Justice Department asked an appeals court to block the lawsuit, which was first filed on June 14, 2017, writing that Trump was “likely to suffer irreparable injury” because of “intrusive discovery into his personal finances based on the public office he holds.”

Trump was enormously persistent in challenging the lawsuit; a district court had originally ruled the members filing the lawsuit had “sustained their burden to show that they have standing to bring their claims.” Trump then moved to certify the district court’s standing order for interlocutory appeal, which was denied in June 2019. Trump again moved to certify the district court’s standing order and was denied again. Then Trump petitioned the appeals court for a writ of mandamus, which was also denied. But the court also remanded the matter “for immediate reconsideration of the motion to certify,” prompting the district court to certify both dismissal denials for interlocutory appeal and stay its proceedings. The appeals court then granted the interlocutory appeal.

Elizabeth Warren Would have Trans Kid Approve her Secretary of Education

During campaigning in Iowa Elizabeth Warren told delegates she would have a nine year old trans kid she met last year vet her future Secretary of Education. She met the child last year at CNN’s LGBTQ town hall debate.

“I have two qualifications that I talk about over and over for my secretary of education,” she told a Cedar Rapids audience. “The first: It has to be someone who’s taught in a public school, hello? And part two, because it came from a young trans person who asked about a welcoming community and I said it starts with a secretary of education who has a lot to do with where we spend our money, with what gets advanced in our public schools, with what the standards are, and I said, ‘I’m going to have a secretary of education that this young trans person interviews on my behalf.’”

The Massachusetts Democrat then added: “Only if this person believes that our Secretary or Secretary of Education nominee is absolutely committed to creating a welcoming environment, a safe environment, and a full educational curriculum for everyone will that person actually be advanced to be Secretary of Education.”

WHO Declares Global Health Emergency Over Coronavirus

The World Health Organisation has declared a global health emergency over coronavirus. This comes as the virus has spread across every region of China and continues to spread to other nations.

“The main reason for this declaration is not what is happening in China but what is happening in other countries,” said WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

The virus has claimed 170 lives in China. The WHO has said there are 98 confirmed cases across 18 other countries outside of China.
